La La Land Honorable Mention: The Birth of a Nation Sing Street The Lobster Greetings Parents and Guardians, I am so pleased to be teaching your son or daughter Foundations of World History this upcoming school year at Windham High School. I would like to take this opportunity to share a little about myself, my teaching philosophy, the course content and tools, and my availability. Although this is my first year at Windham High School, I have been working with high school students in various capacities for five years, and most recently I worked at Deering High School in Portland, where I also coached boys’ soccer and unified basketball. As a social studies teacher, I believe it is my job to create a safe learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, taking risks, developing ideas, and collaborating with others to solve problems. Foundations of World History is a student-centered class where students are empowered to develop the essential skills of investigating the world, communicating their ideas, recognizing other perspectives, and taking action to create change. The course focuses on a wide range of topics, including, but not limited to, the beginning of recorded history, pre-history, ancient civilizations, ancient Greece and Rome, and world religions. In an effort to make Foundations of World History as student-centered as possible, this class will be almost entirely digital. The bulk of assignments and daily work will be completed on the learning platform Google Classroom. Within Google Classroom, students will use a variety of Google apps, including Google Docs, Google Slides, and Google Forms. Additionally, blogging will play an integral role in the learning process this year, and students will be using the blogging platform Kidblog throughout the year. Finally, I have created this class website which is the place to find class updates and announcements, the course syllabus, daily and weekly agendas, homework reminders, and my contact information. I am incredibly excited to work with you and your son or daughter this school year. I firmly believe that parents and guardians play a crucial role in student success, and I look forward to building a positive partnership with each of you. Please know that my door is always open (Room 106-B), and I am always available via email or comments on the class site. Lastly, I would like to extend a warm invitation to all students and families to attend our Windham High School Open House on Tuesday September 13th from 6-8:30 PM. I hope to see all of you there, and in the meantime, please let me know if you have any questions or concerns regarding your son or daughter's education. Sincerely, Mr. Miles Bisher Social Studies Teacher Windham High School [email protected] 207-892-1813 (Ext. 2106, VoiceMail Ext. 3106) |
