Human Footprint Project
Standard: ESS 3-6 Long-Term Learning Target: I can use computational representation to illustrate the relationships among Earth systems and how these relationships are being modified by human activity. Project Learning Targets:
Overview You will individually calculate four aspects of YOUR human footprint (energy, water, food, and waste). Once you have collected and recorded all of your data, you will graph your individual results, as well as the regional, national, and international averages. Finally, you will create a Google slideshow containing the graphs and data for each area of your human footprint, as well as a slide comparing and contrasting data and analyzing your impact on the environment. *Create a Google spreadsheet to record all of your data for this project! Part I: Energy Footprint Measure your energy footprint using the link below. Make sure you record your data! Personal Energy Calculator: http://environment.nationalgeographic.com/environment/energy/great-energy-challenge/global-personal-energy-meter/?source=great-energy-challenge Part II: Water Footprint Measure your water footprint using the link below. Make sure you record your data! Water Footprint: https://www.watercalculator.org/wfc2 Part III: Food Carbon Footprint Click on the link below and skip to the “Food” portion of the carbon calculator and fill in the appropriate information to measure your food carbon footprint. Make sure you record your data! Food Carbon: http://coolclimate.berkeley.edu/carboncalculator Part IV: Waste Collection Over the course of 24 hours, you will collect all of your garbage* in a gallon sized zip-lock bag that you will carry with you everywhere you go over this time period. *PLEASE do NOT include any “bathroom waste” (human waste and/or personal hygiene products)! Once you collect all of your garbage, you will weigh your bag and record your data in class. Part V: Graph Data Use the link below to create graphs for each aspect of your individual human footprint. You must find data for and graph at least one or two of the following (along with your individual data) for each aspect of the human footprint: regional averages, national averages, international averages. Graph: https://nces.ed.gov/nceskids/createagraph/default.aspx?ID=33318c58d13c4cff9034514cad53265a Part VI: Analyze Data The final slide of your slideshow should be an analysis and reflection of your data. You should answer or address the following questions: -Compare and contrast your data and the regional/national/international data. Are you more or less responsible for carbon emissions than the averages for the majority of the population? Why do you think that is? (Reference data in your answer to support your analysis). -What aspect of your human footprint caused the most waste/pollution? What was most surprising and/or disturbing about your data? -What action steps can you take to lessen your human footprint? (Use concrete examples based on your data: hint- there are tips to lessen your impact included in each of these footprint calculators!)
